Blur’s New Song is Really Pretty
Can Damon Albarn do wrong? I think not. After touring the world behind the super rad Gorillaz album Plastic Beach with an all-star band, Mr. Albarn has shifted his attention toward his old mates in Blur, and debuted a new track live over the weekend at a benefit concert in London. Watch the video below.
Albarn says the song, called “Under the Westway,” was "written up the road a few weeks ago" and it has “a lot of words,” and it does. It’s a gorgeous, Lennon-esque piano ballad with lyrics recalling a memorable summer day London Town. Guitarist Graham Coxon provides acoustic guitar accompaniment. Dig it.
Blur are also slated to play London’s Hyde Park on August 12 to honor the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. “It’ll be a proper party,” Albarn told NME. “It’s the closing night of the Olympics. Our raison d’etre is to provide another celebration of a fantastic day.”
Sounds good to me. Let’s just hope that after this long-awaited Blur album, Albarn gets a-crackin’ that much-mooted solo debut.
