Genre Report: Lost Joy Division Tapes Unearthed By Jamie Oliver & More
POST-PUNK: Jamie Oliver Uncovers Lost Joy Division Masters
Jamie Oliver (one of the many British chefs you have probably seen on TV) unearthed some lost Joy Division and New Order master tapes while tearing up the basement of a Manchester restaurant he was renovating. The session tapes from the vaunted Manchester bands were found next to a pile of guns, gold and jewelry. WTF? Well, the restaurant is built over a former bank branch, so that kinda-sorta explains the gold and jewels, but not the master tapes from two of the greatest bands from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. Oliver handed the material over to the British Treasury, who will hopefully give them to the right people. Coincidentally, Oliver was the drummer for a Brit pop band named Scarlet Division. But this could end up being his greatest contribution to the music world. [NME]
POP DIVAS: Adele Picked a Weird Time To Match Whitney Houston's Chart Record
Can Adele do anything wrong? Apparently yes, but only by unfortunate coincidence. Just this week, her Grammy-winning album 21 tied the record for most consecutive weeks spent at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Album Charts. Which isn't bad, but just... awkward, considering the record is currently held by Whitney Houston for The Bodyguard soundtrack. And there's a good chance that next week, given her post-GRAMMY boost, Adele will shatter Whitney's record. ALSO: Adele was kidding about taking a five-year break. Just a little hyperbole, folks. METAL: Megadeth Frontman Favors Rick Santorum for President
Who’s more metal than Rick Santorum? Apparently no one, at least in the eyes of Dave Mustaine, lead singer for metal gods Megadeth. Mustaine wants a Republican in the White House, period, but Santorum is his man. “I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I'm hoping that if it does come down to it, we'll see a Republican in the White House... and that it's Rick Santorum," said Mustaine. The former Metallica guitarist also likes Newt Gingrich, but wouldn’t vote for him, and said of Ron Paul, “He'll make total sense for a while, and then he'll say something so way out that it negates everything else.” We know what you mean, Dave "9/11 Conspiracy Theorist" Mustaine. ELECTRONIC: Skrillex is Dating Which British Songstress?
It sounds like Skrillex has something more than just three Grammys under his belt these days. US Weekly is reporting the American dubstep producer and British electro-pop singer Ellie Goulding have been dating since last November. "It's a really cool new romance and they get along perfectly," says the magazine’s source in Los Angeles, where Goulding has been working as of late. If only they’d met earlier! She could have had Skrillex spin tracks at the Royal Wedding reception! What might have been…. [US Weekly]
INDIE: Two Indie Buzz Bands Provide Soundtrack to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Photo Shoots
When you think indie music, you think bodacious babes in bikinis making pouty faces for the camera, right? Well, maybe not, but Sports Illustrated tapped 10 indie bands (including the Black Lips) to play today’s magazine release party. If you’re not in Las Vegas to join the indie cheesecake fun, you can watch these behind-the-scenes videos of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue photo shoots set to music from Toro Y Moi and White Denim.
