Hear Kid Cudi's Dark, Rockin' "Hunger Games" Track
With just over a week to go before the dystopian sci-fi flick The Hunger Games hits theaters, Kid Cudi has unleashed his contribution to the soundtrack. So far, the Internet's response to “The Ruler & The Killer” has been a bit divided, but I'm gonna go ahead and say it rules.
Those who prefer Cudi as the broad-minded rapper (“Day ‘n’ Nite”) are already annoyed that he's delivered another rock song, in keeping with his recent side project WZRD.
Personally, I agree that his WZRD album is so-so but I’m warming up to “The Ruler & The Killer” very fast. From the militant drumming to the thorny guitar riff to the ominous chorus (“You don’t talk, you don’t say nothing, okay?”), this song really gels with the vibe of the book.
Given its lack of a clear hook, "The Ruler & The Killer" clearly isn’t intended to tear up the pop charts but rather to capture the tone of the story. It sounds suited to a movie about kids forced to kill each other in an arena by their oppressive government. So that's awesome.
You can listen to the track below, but if it gets taken down from YouTube, it’s hosted over at HHNM.
What do you think of Kid Cudi’s contribution to The Hunger Games soundtrack? Do you wish he’d hurry up and return to hip hop? Or does this song just make you hungrier for the film? Let us know below.
