Punk Frontman: "Katy Perry Should Die"
The worlds of hardcore punk and Top 40 pop have collided at last! Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham (a.k.a. Pink Eyes) tweeted a harsh critique of Katy Perry’s marine-themed “Part of Me” music video that sent Perry’s vast army of fans (a.k.a. "Katycats") into an ALL CAPS rage equal to Fucked Up’s fiery punk ethos.
It all started when Abraham tweeted this: "Seeing Katy Perry as a soldier in 'Part of Me' really makes me think that we need to start a war so she can go die."
Ouch. While there’s certainly a point to be made about the dangers of casual war imagery in pop, that last line is a little rough. However, we should mention his tweet is partially in reference to a lyric from the ’70s punk band Fear: “Let’s have a war so you can go and die.” So it’s probably meant half in jest.
After an endless barrage of vitriolic tweets from Katy's fans attacking his weight, lesser fame and Canadian-ness, Abraham acknowledged that he might’ve gone too far—but he stands by his original point.
"Yes I'm aware my last tweet was kinda dumb but so is glamorizing war to sell records to idiots. Katy Perry Still Sucks."
So there you go! What do you think of all this? Did Katy’s video make you uneasy as well or do you think what Abraham tweeted is akin to his band—f*cked up?
