Bon Iver Records Album With Underground Rapper Astronautalis
Considering Bon Iver mainman Justin Vernon's work on Kanye West's last album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, this seemed like only a matter of time: Vernon has teamed with underground Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis to record a new album.
Pitchfork points to an interview Astronautalis gave to City Pages, in which he dishes out a few of the details. Apparently, Bon Iver's S. Carey and Ryan Olson, the founder of Vernon's other band Gayngs, are also part of the effort. The wrecking crew recorded the LP over a "whiskey-fueled weekend" at Vernon's April Base studio in Wisconsin.
Vernon, Carey and Olson wrote and recorded eight pieces of music, which Astronautalis freestyled over for eight hours. However, the rapper tells City Pages that the album "will only sound like a hip hop record to a certain degree." Indiehop? Yep. And, perhaps best of all, Astronautalis -- who documented the weekend in pics on his Tumblr -- says the group are "hell-bent on getting [the album] out really quickly" and playing shows. Rad.
