DJ Jazzy Jeff Talks Mac Miller Collaboration
We caught up with DJ Jazzy Jeff at his home for an upcoming volume of "Crate Diggers," but we also wanted the dirt on his upcoming mixtape with Mac Miller set for release this summer. In the video above, Jeff waxes on hearing the 20-year-old rapper for the first time and Mac's appreciation for his rap forefathers.
"He held his own," said Jazzy Jeff after hearing Mac's "Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza" for the first time. "It was like, 'Wow, this is a young kid rapping off of some '90s boom bap hip hop and doing it justice.'"
Jeff hit the rapper up on Twitter to show support. "He tweeted back, 'Oh my God. I can't believe you hit me," said Jeff. "He told me, 'I learned how to MC listening to Nas, Guru and Large Professor.' Him just being a product of what we did and making a name for himself, he was just like, 'You know what? I think it would be really cool if we did a project that was a throwback to that era.'
For Jeff, Miller's picking up the torch from his forebears. "It's amazing that somebody like him has 16-year-old kids loving Tribe Called Quest. For his shows before he comes out, he's playing Tribe and Tupac records and it's like, 'This is deep.'"
