Neil Young & Crazy Horse's Savage Version of Children's Song

"She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" finally gets an electric guitar solo

From directing a movie with Devo to sampling George W. Bush, Neil Young has always managed to surprise fans over his 46-year-long career. But I have to say his latest release still caught me off guard—recording a straight-faced cover of the Appalachian-flavored children's song "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" is bizarre even for him. Even more surprising is that this kid's song kicks ass.

Backed by the always-ferocious Crazy Horse, Young turns the kindergarten sing-along into a stomping, ominous rocker. Which is actually very fitting: The song was originally written about Jesus riding around in a chariot during the fiery apocalypse. Check out the appropriately old-timey music video above.

In other "no, we're not kidding" news, Young & Crazy Horse also covered classics like "Clementine" and the 1957 doo wop song "Get a Job" for their upcoming album. But you'll probably have to wait until Americana drops on June 5 to hear those.
