Listen: Best Coast Cover Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon"
Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino has long been a fan of Fleetwood Mac, going so far as to design a "Stevie Nicks Cape" for her recent Urban Outfitters clothing line. So when we saw the tracklisting for the upcoming Mac tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me, we weren't surprised to see the Los Angeles surf-pop duo's name covering the British-American pop group's 1976 hit "Rhiannon."
Now Pitchfork's got the track! While the group hews close to the original version—Cosentino engaging in vocal hero worship throughout the tune—a piano melody replaces the original's guitar riff, giving the track a more pop-friendly vibe. Imagine Van Dyke Parks working out a rough sketch of the song and you're pretty close.
If you're more a fan of late-'60s blues-rock era Fleetwood Mac, then we highly encourage you to check out ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons take on 1969's "Oh Well." That's just fire right here. Also, in unrelated Best Coast news, Cosentino and Co. teamed with Iggy Pop to record a duet called "Let's Boot and Rally" for HBO's True Blood. It will play on July 8 during the end credits of the fifth episode, Rolling Stone reports.
