LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 20: Musical group Marianas Trench arrives at the 2011 American Music Awards held at Nokia Theatre
Steve Granitz

To be honest, I didn't know much about Marianas Trench when I learned they were the MuchMusic Video Awards' most-nominated artist (with a whopping eight nods, which is one more than Drake). But when I caught the Canadian pop-punk outfit tearing up the Jersey Shore at Bamboozle 2012 for a devoted East Coast fan base, I was knocked out. Usually I don't go for punk of the "woah-oh!" sing-along variety, but the immediately arresting craftsmanship behind their songs won me over, even as a newcomer. (For example, check out "Fallout" below). Lead singer Josh Ramsay's full-throttled onstage presence was equally impressive, despite an April hospitalization.

Even if you don't know Marianas Trench, you're definitely familiar with what Ramsay can do with a good hook: The punk frontman wrote Carly Rae Jepsen's ubiquitous hit "Call Me Maybe." Jepsen and her melody-making benefactors will both perform at the MMVAs this Sunday, June 17, which Fuse is live broadcasting at 9p/8c. So to find out if Marianas Trench take home any (or all) of the eight awards they're nominated for, tune in. It should be a killer night: Last time Trench played the MMVAs, Ramsay parodied Lady Gaga's exploding bra with his own sparkling chest piece.
