Watch Against Me! and Joan Jett Cover the Replacements' "Androgynous"
Though they were technically opening for hard rockers The Cult, Against Me! had the audience on their side before they even set foot on the stage of New York's Terminal 5. The crowd was filled with fans eager to show support for the lead singer (formerly known as Tom Gabel, now Laura Jane Grace), who is in the midst of a very public gender transformation. The front of the venue was filled fans shouting "we love you Laura" and singing along to new songs "Black Me Out" and "True Trans Soul Rebel," both set for an upcoming album tentatively titled Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
Toward the end of the set, Grace apologized for the cover the band were about to perform, noting it was a cliché because of how much they loved the band, and because "I'm a transsexual." But no one seemed to mind when Grace introduced her "hero" Joan Jett for a take on The Replacements' classic "Androgynous," which celebrates all those who chose to live their lives outside of strictly-defined boxes.
Against Me! have not been shy about their love of the Minneapolis drunk-punk legends, having previously covered 'Mats standards "Bastards Of Young" and "Here Comes A Regular" for various compilations. No slouch herself, Joan Jett has previously covered "Androgynous" for her 2006 album Sinner.
