Art Critic Reviews Justin Bieber & Chris Brown's Album Covers
While album art "matters" less and less due to the declining popularity of physical records and CDs, artists are still going all out with the time-honored medium. We hit up Carlo McCormick, a senior editor and art critic at PAPER magazine, to give us his thoughts on album covers from Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Fiona Apple, Smashing Pumpkins and Maroon 5.
Which did he like best? Well, he certainly had a lot to say about the cover of Chris Brown's Fortune: "It's a cypher. When you ask people what they think of Chris Brown, and that could be what you think of his life and his bio or his music, it's sort of like the cypher. It's so predetermined. Everyone has their own reading of him. Some people will never forgive him for what he's done, other people think his music's garbage and other people think he's the greatest thing that ever happened. So I think it works really good that way that he's admitting that he's a cypher. He's physicalizing it!"
Watch the video above for more of McCormick's thoughts, then let us know what you think in the comments!
