Metric Tell Us About Their New BFF, Lou Reed

Metric singer Emily Haines and guitarist Jimmy Shaw met up with Fuse backstage at Lollapalooza, where they told us all about their new album, 'Synthetica,' and their new best pal, Velvet Underground rock legend Lou Reed

On their new album, Synthetica: "We examine why things are the way they are in the world," Shaw says of the conceptual release. "Technological advances in the world and how people relate to each other. Too many text message relationships with people. You don't really know if that happened or not. You see that person after two months, after thousands and thousands of words said, and you're like, 'I have no idea who you are.' We don't know how to relate to the technology around us. It's getting weird and surreal."

Adds Haines, "It's about questions, not answers."

And about meeting and befriending Lou Reed backstage at a Neil Young tribute show in Vancouver, BC. "To my surprise, when I met him, the first thing he says to me, 'Emily Haines, who would you rather be, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones,' which is a line from our song 'Give Me Sympathy.' He's calling me out as a writer! I was quick on my feet and was like, 'Lou. I want to be the Velvet Underground of course.'"

"So we called him to sing on the new record," she adds. "[It was] super memorable."
