Lady Gaga Donates $1 Million to Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief
Lady Gaga announced on her Little Monsters website that she is pledging $1 million to the American Red Cross to assist with Hurricane Sandy Relief in her native New York.
Gaga wrote a letter to the city and the Red Cross: "If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today. New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion."
Lady Gaga is presenting the donation on behalf of her sister and her parents with "their deepest gratitude" toward New York City.
With estimates approaching $50 billion in damage and another winter storm headed to the already flood-ravaged area, there's no doubt Gaga's generous gift will be put to good use. (Props also to Phish's Trey Anastasio for lending a helping hand in Red Hook, Brooklyn.)
A former resident of the Lower East Side, Gaga tweeted just days after Hurricane Sandy hit, "I'll be there as soon as i can to help my old neighborhood." Something tells us she'll stick to her word.
