After rumors of a Justin Bieber/Psy collaboration hit the Internet recently, we probably weren't the only ones who thought they'd be debuting a new song together last night at the American Music Awards. WRONG! Instead, Psy performed with someone no one saw coming: MC Hammer. And yes, it was epic.
Psy hit the stage in a sequined jacket and sunglasses (Michael Jackson swag) and gave us all what we tuned in for -- a pumped-up performance of "Gangnam Style" that any energy drink would be proud of. The K-Pop sensation's performance of the most viral song of the year would have sufficiently concluded the 2012 AMAs on its own, but then the dude brought out MC Hammer and all hell broke loose. (Kind of like the Rihanna plane.) Once the audience recognized Psy and Hammer were about to go H.A.M. on 1991 hit "Too Legit To Quit," s--t got real... really awesome. Psy might not have won an AMA but he definitely won the AMAs.
But some people did win AMAs! Justin Bieber nabbed Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and Artist of the Year (and he brought his adorable mom on stage with him when he accepted the award), Nicki Minaj took home Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist, and Taylor Swift was somehow still surprised when she won her fifth consecutive AMA for Favorite Country Female Artist.
Standout performances of the night include Kelly Clarkson's greatest hits medley, Pink, who brought her "Try" video to life onstage and Taylor Swift's masquerade ball-inspired take on "I Knew You Were Trouble." Besides Psy and MC Hammer, the runner-up for best performance of the night (according to us) goes to Christina Aguilera's Lotus medley, which had her sharing the spotlight with some very flexible backup dancers. #youbetterwork
