Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner—lead singer of 1970s funk outfit Ohio Players—passed away yesterday at age 69. Bonner might be gone, but his band's immortal funk hits live on. Ohio Players were part of a frequently under-valued movement of musicians who made funky-as-f-ck riffs you wanted to hear over and over—and in the process shattered the idea that a chart hit has to revolve around the chorus.

Even when you're listening to an inventive post-funk band that isn't particularly funky, they still owe a debt to the innovative musicianship of pioneers like James Brown, George Clinton's P-funk collective and Sly & the Family Stone. So from classic funk excursions by major artists like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye to one-hit wonders like A Taste of Honey and the Chakachas, here's Fuse's booty shakin' & baby makin' Feelin' Funky Playlist.
