With hip hop firmly entrenched for decades as one of America's most popular genres, you'd think the list of rap songs to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 would be overflowing in the hundreds. Surprisingly, though, only 54 tracks, starting with Blondie's 1981 classic "Rapture" all the way through Macklemore + Ryan Lewis's "Thrift Shop," have topped the charts. Listen to them all in the playlist below, which doubly serves, if we may say so ourselves, as a nice compendium of the history of hip-hop.
