Ever since the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack sold 4 gajillion records in 1977, the word "disco" has been a four-letter word; quick shorthand for cheesy, outdated dance music to play at weddings and Bar Mitzvahs for your drunk uncle to embarrass you to. But the genre has a rich and diverse history, inspired by the best funk music and laying the groundwork for early hip hop.
