For 21-year-old Australian DJ/producer Flume, South by Southwest is as much a journey into American culture as music festival. When we spoke to the Sydney native earlier this week, he told us his first time in the United States was last year for the CMJ music festival in New York and select shows in Los Angeles. Now, he's one of the most buzzed-about electronic artists at this year's festival.
During a late-night Friday morning set at Latitude 30, the DJ melded distant, cold synths with warm vocals, alternating between hands-in-the-air big-room club music and reflective, moody compositions. Despite the intimate setting, Flume worked the crowd like it was an arena show.
And while he's not at that level yet, don't be surprised to see the rising producer, whose self-titled debut was released in the states last month, play bigger and bigger venues with each tour.
