Janelle Monae Nails Cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" on 'Late Night'
With the release of Jimi Hendrix's posthumous People, Hell and Angels album, which debuted at No. 2 with help from 12 previously unreleased songs, there's a resurgence of love for the rock n' roll legend. Janelle Monae was feeling the love too, performing "Little Wing" Monday night with The Roots on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
While Hendrix's version showcases his loose, laid back style, Monae hits each syllable and note with punctuation. There's a killer solo from Monae's guitarist, Kellindo Parker, that recalls Hendrix's famous skills.
Fallon had Prince and Justin Timberlake on for week-long residencies, and even honored the Stones' Exile on Main St. reissue with a week of covers from Green Day, Sheryl Crow, Phish and others. So why not a week of Hendrix covers? Just sayin...
