Remembering Cult Music Film 'Empire Records'
With sales of vinyl records at an all-time high, the love and importance of record stores in the digital era remains an important part of the music discovery process. Sure, some algorithm can tell you what to listen to, but it's way better (and cooler) to take the advice of the music nerd in the record store who's listened to everything before you've even heard of it.
Which is why we have a sweet spot for films like Empire Records. The 1995 movie about a group of record store employees trying to raise money for their boss to avoid getting bought out by "the man" has been a cult hit ever since it was released.
The film's soundtrack spawned two alternative rock hits—Gin Blossoms' "Til I Hear it From You" and Edwyn Collins' "Girl Like You"—and included the debut of the Martinis, the side project of Pixies members Joey Santiago and David Lovering. If you haven't heard the soundtrack in a while or are just discovering this gem, check out the soundtrack below.
And if you want to watch the movie in all its gloriousness, check it out on Fuse July 1 at 2:30a/1:30c and July 2 at 11p/10c. Find Fuse in your area with the Channel Finder.
