Preview Toronto Producer Marco Polo's Album 'PA2: The Director's Cut'
Toronto beatmaker Marco Polo has produced tracks for Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch and his next project, PA2: The Director's Cut (out in July), boasts over 25 guests, including DJ Premier, Styles P and Kweli. But despite the all-star cameos, Polo says the upcoming LP is all about himself.
"I'm coming out as the artist Marco Polo," he tells Fuse's weekly series "The Mixdown," which previewed Polo's upcoming album in his studio and got the stories behind many of the best tracks.
"With PA2, I attacked it by getting a bunch of quality stuff and tying it all together like Dre did with The Chronic, Pete Rock did with Soul Survivor and Marley Marl did with his early albums. It's not a compilation to me. It's art."
Polo also tells Fuse the story behind "G.U.R.U.," his tribute track to the late Gang Starr rapper Guru. "Without sounding corny, I made this on the day Guru passed," Polo explains. "I was definitely going through something emotionally, because [Gang Starr] was so important to me coming up. You can feel that something was going on with me that day. I was slightly emo."
