Since late July, when news broke that the reissue of Nirvana's third, and final, album In Utero would arrive on September 24 with more than 70 tracks, fans have been not-so-patiently awaiting the final tracklist. Now it's here, and it's a doozy.

The reissue will be available in standard CD and digital formats, and as a 3xCD/1-DVD "super deluxe edition," for which Rolling Stone has the breakdown. It contains a total of 70 tracks, including two versions of In Utero (the original LP remastered, plus the album newly remixed), plus b-sides, demos, rarities, live recordings and more.

Highlights include "Forgotten Tune," a newly discovered instrumental rehearsal track, plus drummer Dave Grohl's "first ever solo recording," a 1990 demo of the b-side "Marigold." There's a DVD of 1993's MTV "Live & Loud" concert at Seattle's Pier 48, featuring the entire show plus outtakes, and footage from the In Utero Euro tour and an extended version of the "Heart-Shaped Box" music video.

The "super deluxe edition" is topped off with reproductions of Cobain's handwritten lyrics, liner notes written by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, who toured with Nirvana, and a four-page note that Albini wrote to the band before entering the studio to record In Utero

Which will be interesting to read. Because unfortunately missing, however, is Albini's complete, unaltered original mix of In Utero. Here's the story: Following the chart-breaking success of Nevermind, Nirvana wanted to salvage any artistic credibility amid their indie-minded alt-rock peers and chose to work with Albini, in part thanks to his visceral production work on albums by left-of-center artists like the Breeders, Tad and the Jesus Lizard. However, Nirvana's management and label, and soon the band themselves, were unhappy with the uncommercial sound of Albini's original mixes of In Utero

The band approached Albini to remix and remaster the album, but he refused. Scott Lit was brought in to rework a few tracks, including the singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies," and the entire album was remastered to sharpen the bass and vocal sounds, making it more radio friendly.

Albini was later critical of the end result, suggesting a verbal contract with Nirvana was broken when the band altered the product they collaborated on.

"The end result, the record in the stores doesn't sound all that much like the record that was made," he told Goldmine magazine. "Though it's still them singing and playing their songs, and the musical quality of it still comes across."

And there's still more unreleased Nirvana/Cobain material locked away: Revisit Fuse's interview with former Hole and Cobain pal Eric Erlandson, who says the Nirvana frontman was working on a solo "White Album" at the time of his death.
