M.I.A. Says New Album 'Matangi' Represents Freedom of Speech
M.I.A. knows a thing or two about freedom of speech—not only did she threaten to leak her album without Interscope's approval but she also Skyped WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the beginning of a recent New York show. Bad ass.
So it makes sense that her latest album, Matangi, was inspired by the concept in general.
The "Y.A.L.A." rapper recently stopped by Fuse to chat about the new album, and she opened up about the Hindu goddess that inspired the title. "[Matangi] was the goddess of spoken word and she sort of stood for freedom of speech," M.I.A. said. "It just opened up a different way to study music for me... It was a journey to explore as much about music as possible."
Check out more with M.I.A. above discussing the album recording process and working with new and old producers.
