One Direction's Liam Payne caused quite the stir on Twitter after he sent one of the main cast members from Duck Dynasty a message of support.

While the boys from 1D are all avid social media users, Liam's tweet was taken by many fans as a show of support for not only the show, but also the homophobic and racist opinions held by Duck patriarch, Phil Robertson.

Robertson recently came under fire for relating homosexuality to bestiality and suggesting African Americans were happier before the civil rights movement, among other things, in a GQ article.

Niall's tweet was directed at Robertson's son, Willie Robertson, and it read:

After enduring a barrage of negative tweets, the boybander tried to clarify his stance. He wrote, "Being a fan of someones show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say."

While Payne didn't specifically address his views regarding Phil Robertson's comments, he did respond to one fan's comment by saying, "people can love who they want, its none of my business."

Other than causing social media stirs, Niall and the boys are busy promoting their latest album, Midnight Memories, and prepping for a big tour kicking off this summer.
