Chris Brown, Lady Gaga & Selena Gomez Score Worst Acting Razzie Noms
With the 2014 Academy Award nominations out this morning, the year is off to a very good start for Best Original Song nominees U2, Pharrell and Karen O. Chris Brown, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez, however, are not faring as well in the realm of musicians crossing into film.
The Razzies nominated Breezy and Mother Monster for the Worst Supporting Actor/Actress Award of 2013, thanks to their performances in Battle of the Year and Machete Kills, respectively. Gomez one-upped her musical elders, however, earning a Worst Leading Actress Razzie nom for her starring role in the action flick Getaway. Congrats, guys!
It's worth noting, however, that critics savaged all three of these films, so it's not like their acting sabotaged otherwise prestigious, artistically relevant films. And critics did single out Brown's fantastic footwork in the dance competition movie for praise (although few did the same for his acting chops). As for Gaga, her appearance as a hitman (hitwoman? hitmonster?) in Machete Kills was really more of a cameo than a supporting role, so it's a little unfair to judge her acting based on minimal screen time.
For Selena, however, there's no way around it: Critics hated her performances, and audiences didn't care to show up for it. Getaway currently enjoys a 2% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. One critic even claimed the Mustang used in Getaway was "the only participant to emerge with its reputation intact."
Ouch. Well, if any of these three win, at least they're in good company: Rihanna won last year for Battleship, and she's pretty much the hottest thing on the planet.
