Jay Z's Barneys Deal Brings in Over $1 Million for Charity
After facing a wave of criticism for collaborating with Barneys, Jay Z's partnership with the high-end retailer has paid off. Literally.
According to the New York Daily News, Jay's exclusive line of clothing and accessories has netted more than $1 million dollars. And every dollar is going to the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation, which offers education opportunities to students in need.
When two shoppers sued Barneys for racial discrimination late last year, fans called for Jay Z to remove his line from the store. But Jay explained his decision to stick with retailer on his blog Life + Times.
"This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions," he wrote. "I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgments, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change."
Everyone wins! And Jay Z is still very, very rich.
