This Friday, HBO will release a Game of Thrones-themed mixtape entitled Catch the Throne, which features contributions from people like Big BoiCommonWale, Daddy Yankee and Bodega Bamz. Would you like to read a sample lyric? Are you sure? Okay, here's one from Wale, via Wall Street Journal: "I'm tellin' whoever messin' with me / I can bring you that Khaleesi heat."

So, why exactly is HBO paying to produce a rap mixtape that in all likelihood will be fascinatingly bad? Well, uh, because they want to appeal to African-Americans and Latinos, two demographics that have steadily abandoned HBO over the last two years. As the WSJ piece puts it, HBO's "goal is to reach out to the show's urban, multicultural audience" in order to "help capture more viewers and expand the premium cable channel's subscriber base."

Whether an OutKast member rapping about a dragon queen will help accomplish that goal is a very open question.
