Pharrell Sports Native American Headdress On 'Elle UK' Cover
UPDATE (6/4): Pharrell has issued an apology for the offending Elle UK cover: "“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry."
Original story: The special collector edition of Elle UK's June issue feature Pharrell on the cover wearing a Native American headdress, and readers aren't entirely "Happy" about it.
The hashtag #NOThappy has sprung up since the publication of the fashion mag, and the topper choice was apparently Elle's, not Pharrell's. The backlash has been swift, not unlike when No Doubt received criticism for frontwoman (and Pharrell pal) Gwen Stefani sporting a feathered, beaded headdress of a similar make. This isn't a new phenomenon, as Indian Country Media points out. (Even Kanye's t-shirts from the Yeezus tour bank on this imagery.)
Pharrell stuck to his now-trademark Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat for his performance at Harlem's Apollo Theater last night and has yet to comment on the Elle UK cover.
