Update (4/1): After Zayn Malik's pal-turned-collaborator Naughty Boy tweeted "I Won't Mind," the former boy bander's first solo song post-One Direction, the Irish Mirror began to claim the tune was intended for 1D. Louis Tomlinson heard about the rumor and tweeted at the publication "is that an April fool?" This seems to confirm two things: The song was never meant for the band of British babes and that it is, in fact, Zayn's first solo jam.

Original Story (3/30): Last week Zayn Malik announced his departure from One Direction. The news arrived less than a week after the British babe dropped off the boy band's 2015 world tour, On the Road Again. A few days passed and Zayn went on the record saying it was just time for him to depart the group, to do "what's right."

Today Malik's longtime friend and producer Naughty Boy surprised everyone (in the midst of a supposed Twitter rant with Louis Tomlinson) with a cryptic tweet, writing "let the music do the talking guys. thank us later. :) x" and linking to a Soundcloud track that has since been deleted. The tune is called "I Won't Mind" and is supposedly Zayn's first song post-1D or, at the very least, the first taste of his solo work. Play it up top.

It's a new sound for Malik. Almost like he's singing an indie rock guitar ballad, Zayn opens with "Look around / Because love is blind," before adding emotional refrains like "We are who we are" and "Right from the start / You know I've got you." Malik winds up concluding "I won't mind / Even though I know / You'll never be mine." Beautiful people get their hearts broken just like the rest of us!

Listen to "I Won't Mind" above and weigh in with what you think this song indicates. Is a Zayn solo career closer than we think?
