After her Broadway debut, we have a feeling the name on everybody's lips is gonna be...Brandy. Starting April 28, the R&B songstress will play the lead role of Roxie Hart for an eight-week run of Chicago at New York's Ambassador Theatre.
After Michelle Williams, Brandy Norwood is only the second African American to play the lead role of Roxie. Lead roles like Mama and Velma Kelly have seen notable actresses of color (Chita Rivera, no less!), but this is a big win for Chicago fans.
Brandy shared her delight in the casting decision with The Grio, commenting on the diversity of the role:
“I think it’s a beautiful thing, and it’s very very important because everybody is different and everybody has something to bring differently than the next person. I think that it’s great that we’re having more opportunities and people are opening their minds to great things.”
Some of our favorite actresses to play the coy, daydreaming murderess in the past are Liza Minnelli, Ann Reinking and Bebe Nuewirth. Though Brandy has some big character shoes to fill, we have no doubt that she'll bring the pipes necessary to make Roxie sparkle. And if the video below is any indication, she's got the attitude down too.
