Will Leona Lewis' Gospel-Rock Single Score Her a Major Comeback?
You remember Leona Lewis from her chart-topping debut single "Bleeding Love," the ballad of the summer of 2007. Of course you do. Unfortunately, the X Factor UK star's followup material didn't smash as hard as she failed to score another Top 10 single in America while her (quite good) third album Glassheart didn't even get a stateside release. Now with a new label and management (bye, Simon Cowell!), the British songbird seems poised for a comeback with her new single "Fire Under My Feet."
Lewis' latest incorporates a stomping, gospel-rock sound that we've heard from hit singles by fellow U.K. divas like Adele, Emelie Sande and Ella Henderson. The genre is perfect for Leona's vocals to shine, with her voice sounding stronger and more soulful than ever. The lyrics are sometimes a little cliched to make the rhyme work ("I got fire under my feet / And I feel it in my heartbeat" or "Moving on to bigger things / I begin to spread my wings"), but there's an undeniable uplifting feeling here that's easy to overlook.
