Halsey, the 20-year-old singer/songwriter born Ashley Frangipane, has been on our radar for a while now. The alt-pop princess' songs of despair and elation became our full-on obsession when we sat down with her at SXSW 2015. At the time, a few of her jams were floating around on the Internet, mostly from her impressive Room 93 EP.
Late Monday night, Halsey surprised fans by sharing a high-quality version of "Hold Me Down," the first piece from her upcoming debut studio album, Badlands. Those anticipating the record will not be disappointed.
In "Hold Me Down," Halsey plays with her energetic Lana Del Rey sound, opting to sing-shout a bridge of "I sold my soul to a three-piece / And he told me I was holy / He's got me down on both knees / But it's the devil that's trying to hold me down." Like most of her songs, it deals with sex and sadness explicitly, never really finding solace.
