Jatnna Nunez for Fuse

For those not in the know, State Champs are comin' for ya pop-punk ears. The New York band opened for All Time Low on their most recent tour and after that hit the road with 5 Seconds of Summer in Australia. There's no slowing down for the guys, so we made it a point to chat with them at the 2015 Alternative Press Music Awards. Apparently this isn't their first time at the event...but it's the first time they were invited.

Happy APMAs!

Derek Discanio, singer: We're so excited to finally get in this place and see what they've got cooked up for us. Last year we came to this show, the first year they had it. We actually had to sneak onto the red carpet...until someone found out we weren't supposed to be there so they kicked us out. Now we're supposed to here and it's great.

Did you do any interviews?

Derek: No. We didn't really want to step on anyone's toes, but we were definitely pushing it. And now we're up for Best Underground Band and were also presenting one of the performers. Just stoked to be involved!

What can we expect from you?

Derek: There's a lot happening for us right now. We just released a new song, a new single and announced a new album that's coming out later this fall. It's going to be out October 16 and it's called Around the World and Back. The new single is called "Secrets."

You guys just came back from Australia with 5 Seconds of Summer. What was that like?

Derek: That was wild. It was something we're definitely not used to got used very quickly.

Did you take a lot selfies with fans?

Ryan Scott Graham, bass: We literally got chased the first day at lunch. I felt like a Hanson brother.

Derek: We never thought anyone would want to see us when we get off a plane at an airport but there were people always waiting for us there. That was a cool little bucket list check-off.
