On Sunday night (Dec. 13), One Direction went back to where it all began and performed on the live finale of the U.K. version of The X Factor, in an emotional appearance that preceded the group's 2016 hiatus.

1D, which formed on the show in 2010, performed new single "Infinity" as well as "History," and received kind words about their upcoming break via taped video messages from James Corden, 5 Seconds of Summer, David Beckham, Little Mix and others. The group also posted a message on its Facebook page shortly after the X Factor takeover, thanking its fans for their dedication.

“Obviously you guys made all of this happen for us," the group's Liam Payne says in the video, "and we can’t believe the way that you’ve supported us over the last five years. Today’s a very special day for us because this is like the last part of our first chapter.”

One Direction has promised to return following a hiatus of indeterminate length. The thousands of worldwide fans who made #ThisIsNotTheEndOfOneDirection trend on Twitter on Sunday sure hope they're telling the truth.
