Following the success of The Wiz, NBC has announced that its next live musical production will be a new adaptation of Hairspray, which came to Broadway in 2002 and was based on the 1988 John Waters film.
Hairspray will be NBC’s fourth live musical, following The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz. The latter was a ratings smash for the network last month.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who helmed the previous three NBC musicals, are on board to executive produce Hairspray. The Music Man and A Few Good Men were bandied about as The Wiz’s follow-up, but Hairspray was confirmed as the next one to be produced at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on Wednesday (Jan. 13).
Hairspray was also produced as a 2007 film, with John Travolta in the iconic role as Edna Turnblad. No casting details have emerged from the upcoming NBC adaptation, THR notes that the producers are open to having Travolta reprise the role.
