Tim Burton is an uneven master of fantasy: for every Edward Scissorhands, there’s an equal and opposite Dark Shadows. His upcoming adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children looks damn promising, however, with some eye-popping stunts shown in the first trailer.

The titular character is played by Eva Green, but we’re first introduced to the world through Asa Butterfield’s eyes, as Jake navigates underwater and learns to accept the cast of oddballs who have discovered their “peculiarity.” Watch for Samuel L. Jackson to pop up as Jake begins to learn his own peculiar power.

Miss Peregrine arrives in theaters on September 30, and will be Burton’s first film as director since 2014’s Big Eyes. Director James Bobin has taken over his Alice in Wonderland series, as Alice Through The Looking Glass hits theaters on May 27.
