When One Direction announced that it was going on hiatus following the release of Made in the A.M. last year, die-hard fans feared the worst. Was 1D just taking a break, or was it the end of the line?

The question still hangs over Directioners after the boys have insisted they’ll be back, someday. But Simon Cowell, who helped bring 1D together, says he isn’t so sure in a new Billboard cover interview.

"I don't know if it's a hiatus or a breakup, to be honest," says Cowell. "In a weird way, I don't want to know. I don't think they've had enough time to experience what it's like not being in the group to really answer that."

Meanwhile, Cowell confirms that Harry Styles is working on solo material:

"He'll work out what kind of record he wants to make because he's got great taste—which is always a help. All the writers and producers want to work with him, understandably, but he probably won't rush into it."

The first post-1D solo album, Zayn Malik’s Mind of Mine, is out Friday (Mar. 25). Click here to read the complete guide to the album.
