Trent Harmon won the final contest of American Idol on Thursday night (April 7), after a glut of performances from the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson, Dalton Rapattoni, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood and others bid farewell to the show after a 15-year run.
Before Harmon claimed the grand prize, Idol's finale packed quite the performative punch: Just about everyone from the show's earlier years turned up to sing a song and shed a tear, including William Hung, who crashed the party to remind everyone that he can still sing "She Bangs."
Oh yeah, and President Obama delivered opening remarks. After all, American Idol will forever be an American institution:
There was screaming, crying and hugs after Ryan Seacrest introduced Harmon as the victor, the culmination of what the singer described as "working so, so hard" for his entire life. Harmon beat out La'Porsha Renae for the crown, and the two remained locked in a perpetual embrace for the majority of the program—a sign of mutual respect and friendship fostered on the show. After a final performance from Harmon, Seacrest delivered the final send-off, and then let out a deep, somber breath.
