Jared Leto took his role as The Joker very seriously for Suicide Squad. Throughout filming the upcoming blockbuster, the actor/singer sent ridiculous gifts to his cast mates, including used condoms, anal beads and a dead pig. Um, yay?
But Leto explained his reasoning for the gross gifts, telling E! (above) it was to help the cast dive deeper into their roles. It actually make a ton of sense:
"I did a lot of things to create a dynamic; to create an element of surprise, spontaneity. And to really break down any type of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn't really respect things like personal space or boundaries."
The clip above sees Leto talking about the bizarre gifts to fellow Suicide Squad–ers Margot Robbie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Will Smith, who also understood Jared's reasoning:
"He went full Joker—and the rule generally is never go full Joker. He really set the tone, you know? He wasn't playing with it. He was dead serious. As an actor, he was going in; he was 100 percent going into this character. He really jarred the rest of us to say, 'Okay, okay, he's not fooling around so we need to get it right.'"
Suicide Squad still isn't out until August, but you can see the latest, funniest trailer for the film right here. Then watch the actor-singer look back on the moment he didn't know if he'd ever make another film before his Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club:
