According to Deadline, Joaquin Phoenix is being looked into as a prospective option to play Jesus Christ in Garth Davis’ upcoming film Mary Magdalene

See-Saw Films is teaming up with Universal Pictures on the biopic that is also pursuing actress Rooney Mara as the titular role. In February, Davis said of the actress:

“Rooney’s raw, brave approach to performances, coupled with her deeply magnetic inner life, holds all the dimensions needed to bring to life one of history’s most misunderstood woman—Mary Magdalene.”

Phoenix was last seen in Woody Allen’s film Irrational Man while Mara is more recently featured in Davis’ other film Lion, alongside Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel, that is to premiere later this year.

Davis is set to direct the movie with a script from Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett. With production scheduled to begin this summer, Mary Magdalene will hopefully see a 2017 release.
