According to Variety, Prince’s iconic rock drama, and essentially extended music video, Purple Rain, will be appearing in select AMC theaters beginning tomorrow Saturday, April 23 to Thursday, April 28.
The screening of the 1984 film comes in tribute of Prince’s legacy. Purple Rain earned Prince an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and the album of the same title garnered two No. 1 singles, “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” Additionally, Billboard reported that the album spent 24 back-to-back weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1984-85.
The Purple Rain director Albert Magnoli gave a public statement on his website:
"The news of Prince’s sudden and unexpected passing is very difficult to process. He was my creative partner and friend. We shared tremendous times together during and after the making of Purple Rain. I know his fans are devastated. I know his music meant so very much to so many people. He was a good man, complicated and diligent, and like men of his caliber, he always demanded from himself and others the very best. Travel well, friend, wherever your next journey takes you."
AMC is partnering with Warner Bros. to show the film in 87 AMC locations across the United States. Carmike Theaters will also be displaying the film in 80 theaters.
