Kesha’s performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards was on, then off, then on again over the past week, as the pop star clashed with Kemosabe Records on being allowed to take the stage on Sunday night (May 22). Yet Kesha did indeed crash the party, and made a powerful statement, at the Las Vegas ceremony.

During the performance, Kesha tackled Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me, Babe," and although she never made any explicit reference to her tragic legal battle, the emotion in her voice and rapturous response from the audience showcased the subtext. Kesha ended the performance with water in her eyes, and her hands clasped together in a tender thank-you to her supporters.

Kesha has been in a legal battle with Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald since late 2014, and the producer’s Kemosabe Records rescinded her ability to perform last week. When Kesha stated that she was not going to make any statement against Dr. Luke during the performance, Kemosabe doubled back and let the show go on.
