Last night, the Humane Society threw the To the Rescue! gala in Los Angeles. Raising awareness around animal rights, the event also honored songwriter Diane Warren with the humanitarian of the year award.
The event included performances from Steven Tyler and Leona Lewis, among others, who sang songs written by the Grammy-winning writer. The most remarkable performance came from Kesha, backed by Warren on the piano—together they gave a powerful rendition of “Til It Happens to You.”
“I want to dedicate this song to every man, woman, child, and animal that has ever been abused,” Kesha said before breaking into the emotional “Til It Happens to You.” After hearing the cover, the song’s co-writer Lady Gaga went on Twitter to congratulate Kesha for her bravery. “Girl these boys won’t be in charge forever,” Gaga tweeted. “The wisdom of women is rising. Let’s get louder.”
