Red Hot Chili Peppers have not released an album in five years, but rest assured, they are still white boys who enjoy playing that funky music. RHCP announced their new full-length, The Getaway, and issued the lead single, “Dark Necessities,” on Thursday (May 5).

The band teased the song release earlier this week, and although this one's not about California in the way that most Chili Peppers lead singles are, it’s still got a lot of slap-bass and Anthony Kiedis crooning capital-a Anthemic hooks. The big difference here is in the instrumentation, though: The bridge is anchored by a piano, and strings prop up the chorus. Perhaps this is the doing of Nigel Godrich, the Radiohead producer who mixed this album?

The Getaway is due out June 17 on Warner Bros. Records. Red Hot Chili Peppers worked with Danger Mouse on the album, after collaborating with Rick Rubin for decades.
