Bill Simmons’ new HBO show Any Given Wednesday debuted last night with Ben Affleck going absolutely berserk over… the Tom Brady Deflategate controversy? That’s a strange phrase to type, and it’s an even stranger segment to watch.

During the chat with Simmons—and “chat” is a generous term, since it was mostly Simmons chiming in with a nod and few words every now and then—Affleck dropped f-bomb after f-bomb, calling the NFL’s decision to suspend New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for a quarter of the upcoming season “so fucking stupid” and “the ultimate bullshit fucking outrage of sports ever.” (For those wondering, Brady has been suspended for allegedly deflating footballs prior to the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts in 2015. It was probably the Ideal Gas Law that did the deflating.)

In the company of another pissed-off Boston sports fan, Affleck was wild-eyed and excitedly dropping words and phrases like “conspiracy” and “smear campaign.” The actor-director spoke with a frankly incomprehensible urgency over the fact that the Patriots quarterback was maybe going to miss four games (Brady is appealing the decision by the NFL) after bringing home four Super Bowl rings and winning more games than any other franchise over the past 15 years.

The suspension is probably boneheaded, but aren’t there more important things to discuss? How can anyone physically get this amped up over Deflategate, a story that is now 17 months old? What’s going on, Ben? You feeling okay?

Anyway: Affleck should move on from Deflategate and be more excited to talk about his upcoming film The Accountant, which looks pretty good! Click here to watch the trailer.
