After hearing about the fatal shooting of her family friend Christina Grimmie, Selena Gomez performed a heart-rending tribute to the late Voice contestant.
Gomez broke down in tears after singing “Nobody” in concert at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. She then recounted her personal history with Grimmie. "When she was 14, we met her. My parents and I signed her,” Gomez begins. Gomez’s stepfather Brian Teefey was hired as Grimmie’s manager when Grimmie was just a teenager in high school. She toured with Gomez on the We Own the Night tour.
Before transitioning into her performance of “Transfiguration,” Gomez added:
“One thing about Christina and her family, is that she holds her faith so closely to her. It's not about her religion, and it's not about good deeds. It's just that she had faith. And I don't really understand how this happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her."
Marcus Grimmie, Christina Grimmie’s brother, also paid tribute to his sister online. In a moving Facebook post, he wrote, “Christina was more than my sister. She was a partner in life. A superstar.”
Additionally, Billboard report that Grimmie’s New Jersey hometown of Evesham will be holding a vigil to remember the 22-year-old singer. The vigil will be held at the town's Memorial Complex at 8:45 p.m. ET on June 13.
