John Boyega, one of the main stars of the massively successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens, just secured another major role. According to Deadline, the actor was picked up by Legendary Pictures for the lead role in 2013's Pacific Rim sequel.

Boyega is set to be the son of Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba in the previous film). Directed by Steven S. DeKnight (the creator of Starz' Spartacus), the science fiction movie will begin production later this year.

Guillermo del Toro, the original film's director, shared his thoughts on the casting decision:

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The 'Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
