News for science-fiction aficionados: Rihanna is a Trekkie.
On Monday, the singer delivered "Sledgehammer," the lead single from the new Star Trek Beyond soundtrack, and in a new video released Wednesday, Rih-Rih waxes poetic about what the space-fairing franchise means to her as a fan. Watch that video above, which is immediately followed by the Star Trek Beyond official trailer.
"Star Trek has been a part of my life since I was a little girl," Rihanna says. "My dad really is the one who introduced me to Star Trek, it just took me one episode to fall in love with this other world that I couldn't understand but felt like I could relate to."
"Sledgehammer" was written by Australian singer/songwriter Sia, who also penned Rihanna's smash hit "Diamonds" in 2012. Star Trek Beyond releases July 22 in something a bittersweet return for the franchise: The accidental death earlier this month of Anton Yelchin—who played Pavel Chekov in the reboot series—has dampened the occasion, although some cast members have said "Sledgehammer" has helped them cope with the loss.
