'Ugly Naked Guy' is a phrase familiar to Friends diehards, as the unseen man across the street from the gang who happened to be ugly and quite often naked. The character appeared onscreen twice in the show, never with his face revealed or an actual name attached in the credits, so The Huffington Post's Todd Van Luling decided to track down the notorious UNG… and the quest took him over a year to complete.
On IMDb, the role had long been credited to Michael Hagerty, who played the super Mr. Treeger on the show. Yet Hagerty denied that rumor: “IMDb, the information is close, but a lot of times it’s very, very, very wrong. And that said, I’d rather be known as Mr. Treeger than the Ugly Naked Guy anyways.”
Van Luling called casting agents, got to ask show creator David Crane and tried sleuthing on Reddit and Twitter, all to no avail. One year after beginning the search, something shook loose: Jon Haugen, an uncredited extra, is/was/forever will be Ugly Naked Guy.
“It was the best time in my life,” he said of the role, adding, “I was the man.” Haugen also made clear that the scene he facelessly shared with David Schwimmer in season 5 was a clothed affair. “I was in boxer shorts,” admitted Haugen. “At first I was feeling a little shy because I had about 500 people watching me in the audience besides the crew and everything. But after about two minutes went by, I was real comfortable and David Schwimmer was real comfortable. We were just in boxer shorts and they made it look like we were naked.”
