Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already one of next summer’s most anticipated blockbusters, and as news about the Marvel sequel continues to trickle out, so do additions to its universe of characters.
On Friday, Entertainment Weekly revealed some new concept art that includes Mantis, a new female alien character who is played by Pom Klementieff (the Oldboy remake) and gets her social etiquette from the Guardians. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” says executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”
Meanwhile, did you notice that there’s a smaller, cuddlier Groot in the concept art? That may or may not be our beloved tree-dude. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot,” Schwartz continues. “The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”
We’ll find out the answer when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Until then, check out highlights from the most recent New York Comic Con:
